Detecting Surface Melt of Antarctic Ice-sheets Using Scatterometers
نویسنده
چکیده
The SeaWinds on QuikScat and ERS-1/2 scatterometers measure the radar response of the Earth’s surface with high spatialand temporal-resolution. The data collected by these space-borne active-microwave sensors are used to detect periods of surface melting in the Antarctic iceshelves. A description of a statistical melt-detection algorithm is given and the results are shown and compared to other melt-detection methods.

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Surface Melting over Ice Shelves and Ice Sheets as Assessed from Modeled Surface Air Temperatures
Summer surface melting plays an important role in the evolution of ice shelves and their progenitor ice sheets. To explore themagnitude of surfacemelt occurring overmodern ice shelves and ice sheets in a climate scenario forced by anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a coupled climate model was used to simulate the distribution of summer melt at high latitudes and project the future...
متن کاملSeasat, Ers-1/2 and Nscat Scatterometer-observed Changes on the Large Ice Sheets
Satellite-borne wind scatterometers are effective tools for monitoring ice sheets, and microwave imaging techniques enable comparison of historic and contemporary scatterometer data in climate change studies. We document scattering characteristics of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets using data from the NSCAT, ERS-1/2 and Seasat SASS instruments. Cand Ku-band data enable characterization o...
متن کاملMelting of small Arctic ice caps observed from ERS scatterometer time series
[1] Time series of active microwave backscatter data from the ERS Wind Scatterometers are used to demonstrate (1) the timing of melt onset can be observed over small ice caps, as well as the major ice sheets and multi-year sea ice; and (2) temporally integrated backscatter reduction (R) is strongly correlated with total annual positive-degree-days (PDD), as measured at four automated weather st...
متن کاملQuantification of the Greenland ice sheet contribution to Last Interglacial sea level rise
During the Last Interglacial period (∼ 130–115 thousand years ago) the Arctic climate was warmer than today, and global mean sea level was probably more than 6.6 m higher. However, there are large discrepancies in the estimated contributions to this sea level change from various sources (the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets and smaller ice caps). Here, we determine probabilistically the likel...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal variations of snowmelt in Antarctica derived from satellite scanning multichannel microwave radiometer and Special Sensor Microwave Imager data (1978–2004)
[1] We derived the extent, onset date, end date, and duration of snowmelt in Antarctica from 1978 to 2004 using satellite passive microwave scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data. A wavelettransform-based method was developed to determine and characterize melt occurrences. About 9–12% of the Antarctic surface experiences melt annually....
